"I also own Metric Halo's Mobile I/O," he reveals. "I use the MIO preamps and interface to bring analog and digital information into and out of SpectraFoo."

Well-known drummer Brain (Primus, Guns N' Roses) has been using two portable Metric Halo setups while pursuing a parallel career in computer music and beat programming for the past few years.

Brain tried the Mobile I/O against his last interface and was blown away. "The MIO destroyed it," he reports, "as far as the low end, the high end, and the quality of sound. Right away, it was like someone had taken a blanket off the speakers. It's not like you have to be an audiophile - it's something where even my mom could tell the difference!"

Metric Halo has released version 1.5 of the MIO operating system, providing new functionality and increased performance across all MIO hardware models. Users of the 2882, 2882+DSP, ULN-2, and ULN-2+DSP can now take advantage of increased performance under Mac OS X. MIO v1.5 results from aggressively targeted development efforts designed to address inconsistencies with competing DAW applications, operating system anomalies, computer processing shortcomings and FireWire bandwidth issues. Mobile I/O users can also take full advantage of this newly released package in Mac OS 9.

Over the last couple of years, Mark Ballard has worked as system tech with Kylie Minogue and Travis, and as the front-of-house engineer for the classical group Bond. Ballard notes that SpectraFoo's precision is now matched by performance sound system technology. "I find that you now have to be far subtler than you ever were with the older systems, and far more accurate. Having that accuracy of prediction, SpectraFoo comes into its own for cleaning things up."

"I recently did a TV show with Tom in Wales, just the two of us. My gear was stuck in airfreight so I had to improvise. I used the ULN-2 as a guitar interface and processed it in Digital Performer 3 on my PowerBook with Antares Tube, ChannelStrip, and Waves Ren Comp plugins. I just gave the mixer a direct out, for acoustic and electric both. It worked out great."

"With the Mobile I/O I can now easily have four stereo music sources from within my laptop--and switch to a fully portable studio for other recording situations when needed. When the talent discovers that their song is the wrong length, I can fire up the Mobile I/O and do on-site editing to save the day. Due to some of the locations from which we do the Miss Universe show, it can be difficult to get new versions sent overseas in a time-efficient manner. The Mobile I/O allows me to set up a very portable DAW in strange places, sometimes even in my hotel room."
